His Excellency President Dr Lazarus Chakwera Declares 14 Days of Mourning

His Excellency, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has declared 14 days of mourning for people who have lost their lives due to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi.

The president made the declaration through a national address at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

He said it is disheartening that 13 districts are affected, 225 people are dead, 707 are injured, and thousands of households are displaced.

He added that what he saw in Chilobwe, where he attended the funeral, is disheartening.

The Malawi leader also instructed that all flags must fly at half-mast for the first 7 days.

The President added that the government is mobilising resources to ensure those affected are assisted.

Dr. Chakwera said he has just come out of a cabinet meeting to approve K1.6 billion to assist the affected.
